 About the Houses

 Materials

SSB HOUSEWOOD supplies strong, high-quality wood that is intended to endure the passage of time. All logs are laminated, guaranteeing safety and security. Pure and unseasoned logs are susceptible to inevitable problems caused by aging, such as cracking and distortion. These changes in the wood lead to an increased necessity for significant maintenance and management, and thus require extra time and money. By laminating our logs, SSB HOUSEWOOD ensures that the wood will better withstand the stress of construction and course of natural processes, which, in turn, minimalizes aftercare and maximizes the client's satisfaction.

Design

The specific designs and cuts of our logs are of noteworthy importance as well. Jointing techniques must be perfected, because the manner in which two logs are attached and built up on top of the other has the most influence over the quality of the overall structure. We take great pride in our double tapered "Tongue and Groove" jointing method, which is the most suitable and effective measure against shifts in timber due to such factors as aging, water leakage, and earthquakes. Inevitable changes in the wood will not threaten these structural advantages.

Technical Details

At  SSB HOUSEWOOD we believe it is our duty to provide our clients with any information that may be desired regarding the technical details of our materials and work. If you cannot find the information that you want on this website, please refer to the "Contact us" page, and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

The following is an explanation of the important lamination process and its effects:

  1. Logs are artificially dried in a compulsion drying furnace to the point in which there is an 11 to 14 percent decrease in moisture content.
  2. Logs are laminated and the two opposite natural logs are glued together.
  3. The distortion, twisting and cracking of the logs, which often occurs upon evaporation of the remaining moisture within, is counteracted by the lamination.
  4. This process leads to reduced house maintenance after construction. The same technique is often applied in Japan to the manufacturing of pillars and beams of high-class residences that use laminated lumber.

Our logs are also coated with a special anti-UV agent in order to protect them against the harmful effects of the sun. Continuous exposure to ultraviolet rays encourages the process of "choking", whereby bark turns black and begins to peel off. Unfortunately, the oil based stain that is currently applied to logs in Japan does not include any kind of UV coating, so many log houses as young as three years appear black and damaged. SSB HOUSEWOOD is different in that we import stains containing an anti-UV agent to be used on our houses. Once the stain is applied, the natural beauty of the logs' surface can be enjoyed for as long as possible.
